It is What it Is
Or
Is it?
Lately it seems I am hearing the statement, IT IS WHAT IT IS more frequently than ever before. Perhaps I am just sensitive to it because for some reason it rubs me the wrong way. People interviewed on TV are saying it, people around me are saying it. Something about it just doesn’t sound right. So I have to ask why.
I guess most would mean it to sound like a situation or circumstance is real, and there is merit in that but somehow it is, to me, an incomplete thought.
This is what I hear when that sentence is spoken:
It is what it is – finality
It is what it is – therefore nothing can be done about it
It is what it is – so suck it up
It is what it is – nothing can change it
It is what it is – and like the proverbial leopard unable to change its spots neither can we change this
It is what it is – so give up
It is what it is – accept it
This is what I want to hear when that sentence is spoken:
It is what it is – but what can it be?
It is what it is – but how can we change it?
It is what it is – and we will change it.
It is what it is – but we still have hope
It is what it is – but nothing is impossible
It is what it is – but we will not stop trying to improve it.
It is what it is – and we will change it!
Inspiring, glad i read it today, thanks.
I love your can do attitude, Chris. Can we maybe get some of your positivity, liquefy it and add it to the general population’s drinking water? I’m all for spreading this kind of thinking around like a virus. Fingers crossed it’s catchy!
Hahaha thanks for your kind words and I have to say I love the spirit of your site. All I can say is WOW!
Well, Chris, feel free to say it as often as the urge hits you. 😛
And thank you!
I agree, Chris. For me, it’s what someone says when they’ve nothing else to say. We’d all be better off if they just said nothing — but that’s true under most circumstances.
It certainly is true John the bit about saying nothing reminds me about that old statement saying something like, it is better to keep quiet and have people wonder if you are stupid than opening your mouth and confirming it. Alas too often the mouth seems to run on its own motor.
The phrase rings resignation to me.
Resignation is the perfect word for it Georgette!
OH.MY.GOLLY. I thought it was me just having issues with words again. Whew. (I’m a little sensitive to the use of words and phrases for some reason.)
Ah Sensitivity goes with the being a wordsmith Colleen, you wordsmith you! 🙂
😀
John says it all the time, I just want to swipe him out of his chair when I hear it.. c
I can’t quite see you swiping John but it is an amusing thought C. I find people who use it, use it All the time.
and shake their heads mourfully at the same time.. grr.. c
I agree with you. I don’t like this term either. To me it sounds like a cop-out and doesn’t actually s.a.y. anything. Ugh.
Isn’t that the truth! Cop out is a perfect description.
