Planting a Garden Becoming a Beatle

A better garden than mine

Planting a Garden Becoming a Beatle

As the sun beats down in a pretense of summer I am off to conquer new skills, connect with mother earth, and have seven birthdays with thirty five people.

The last garden I planted was in 1981. I had just bought a house in Brantford that had previously been owned by a delightful Italian couple. The back yard hosted a large garden, several fruit trees and flowers everywhere including roses climbing one wall of the house. Oh the joy, the excitement, the whole ‘Green Acres’ of it all.

Yesterday I posted on genes and traits and all things lacking so you must already have come to the conclusion that though not listed, but definitely not present is the gardening Mother Nature gene.

I tilled the garden (truth be told a neighbor tilled the garden) but I was with him in spirit. I planted every veggie possible in straight rows and each night went to bed with dreams of sugar plums ..I mean baskets of healthy fresh veggies in my head.

At first it was pure joy watching and watering seeing life literally spring up. Then the nightmare began, the torture, the exhaustion, and the work.

First came little nasties called weeds, then the birds (the original cast of the movie I think) that perched on my rooftop awaiting noisily the fruits of my cherry trees. Then the roses showed their true evil character spreading wildly and generally making a mess of themselves. And the grass, no matter how often mowed kept growing. And the nicely trimmed huge hedge raised it’s million little arms…trim me trim me they cried. And green things of all sorts crept up between patio stones.

So all of a sudden my dreamy summer days of coming home from work and reclining on my patio in the midst of beauty became hell. Getting home I would change and head outside always trying but never conquering or even becoming one with nature.

The garden came to fruition and no matter what else existed in the world it had to be picked, blanched, canned, frozen, immediately. Immediately! And I had no idea that those few seeds I planted would turn into enough for a small country.

My brother and sister-in-law moved to the country this year. My youngest sister decided we, who live in apartments, should each have a portion of the garden to become one with nature and plant. We’ll see. Since 1981 my love affair with Mother Nature has been at a discreet distance.

Tomorrow my friend Donna and hubby are hosting a joint birthday party. Hers, mine, my daughter-in-law and four others, all Gemini and all this weekend. Here is where the Beatles come in. You know their song, When I’m Sixty-four? Yup that is me. And it seems that just yesterday those digits were reversed. But that is another post.  Seems Geminis in the first week of June are a prolific as those veggies.

So in one hour..planting   – again, shopping and then THE PARTY!

Weddings, Cleanses, Trains, and Automobiles..No Planes Thank God!

Weddings, Cleanses, Trains, and Automobiles..No Planes Thank God!

Planes not..trains and autos yes
You all know -well those of you who read me, the others won’t of course – that I have been completely, let me repeat that, completely laid back, calm, mellow, chilled, composed, placid, tranquil, serene, collected, loose, about this whole wedding thing coming up Saturday. And all without the aid of fermented distilled liquids or other aids.

Vino

For you dear folk that have inquired as to my cleansing attempt to appear perkier for the day….it was disaster! Within two days I noticed an increasing accumulation of fluid and the ‘belly fat” it promised to eliminate. Next day up four pounds! I quickly remedied that by enlisting the help of my good friend Senekot. Some may resort to the help of a personal trainer but Senekot is cheaper and quicker. I cut calories, worked out more and grew and grew and grew.

I got a dress far lovelier than I ever thought possible that fit in the store. I may have to wear an old robe and just carry it on the hanger as I walk down the aisle as Mother of the Groom. MOG. One dear blogging friend said that people would say, “that Chris, she is so MOGnanimous ” Now I fear they may say, “that Chris she is so huMONGous! Just kidding there – all is back to normal. The problem is I wanted better than normal. No glowing liver or colon to display. Probably better that way.

Wedding Robe

So did not sleep as panic stepped in to smack me upside the head last night. “You fool”, it said. “How dare you think you can sail through this unscathed by worry, stress, and fear”?

Away I say!

This morning bought train tickets for sis, Aunt and me.
This morning printed off hotel confirmations for sis, Aunt and me and made one more reservation for another.
Bought the wine for the rehearsal party and had it delivered.

Still must do haircut, manicure, get silky undies…since my innards are no longer worth displaying.

My credit cards are creaking from mounting costs but not yet broken. (Hang on babies just til Monday). Am hosting breakfast the morning after at the King Eddy so Monday it must be.

So:
Cost of wedding prep……………………………………………mucho dinero
Cost of panic, fear, stress, worry, sleeplessness, panic again……………………………………………………………………priceless

DETOX & CLEANSE…WHAT???

DETOX & CLEANSE…WHAT???

So, it is fourteen days to my son’s wedding and no I am not ready …yet. But that is of little consequence, as I live my life not ready. I tried to change that a few times. You know the not being ready and stuff but I swear it is part of my genetic makeup. And I have faith that it will work out and it always does.

Now I am pretty happy with who I am and how I look. I love my body; the way I move, the way I think, the fact that I do laps most days in the pool, I have energy and I revel in the joy of life. And no I am not particularly attractive nor would I fit anyone’s idea of a perfect weight but that is also of little consequence. I am young, generally only date men years younger as that is where the mutual attraction seems to be, but do not think of myself as age discriminate.

That whole thing is not where I used to be in my head, it has grown and developed over the years. Yesterday my sis and I decided to look through the mall to see what kind of suitable dresses might be out there. One sales lady asked what I was looking for and I told her my son’s wedding.

Well she directed me to a rack and my response was …Oh no they are all too old looking. I’m only sixty-four. I don’t want old lady dresses! She darn near choked on her chewing gum! But that also is of little consequence. No Heimlich maneuvers were required and no sales ladies were hurt.

I decided a little Detox & Cleanse would be in order. Just to perk me up. Though I must confess that I have tried it before and lost interest after a few days. Losing interest in such things is also part of my genetic makeup.

I chose natural capsules of some sort: two twice a day for seven days and then one once a day for seven days because that works into my time frame for said miracle. It promises to; reduce belly bloat ( I did not know that is what excess adipose tissue of the abdomen was), reduce body waste build up (I thought nature sort of took care of that in the form of evacuation of..), support colon and digestive system (is that not the same as above?), support the livers natural detoxification process, make you feel lighter and more energized. Gotta say the last two points sold me.

So no dress yet. Actually a lot of things not done yet, but by all that is mighty my colon and liver should look great for the wedding!

Now I am off to swim and yes to do my taxes, as they are due TODAY!

Some Swim with the Fishes

Some Swim with The Fishes

I swim with a small group of elderly folk. Now before some of you youngsters out there start to roll your eyes and chuckle, these guys are like twenty and thirty years older than I.

I am fortunate to live in a lovely building that has a large indoor pool, gym, sauna, hot tub..well you get the idea. And every morning I swim. Okay, okay..since I have come to love y’all I’ll tell the truth. I swim four or five times a week. But in my mind I swim every day.

When I started the morning thing I met a couple in their eighties who ARE there every morning. He swims leisurely and she walks around the pool. (they also hit the gym in the afternoon.)  Then comes an even older lady who exercises in the water doing stretches. The topper is a gal in her nineties who comes in with her walker. She is amazing. She does LAPS! And not just one or two but again and again. They are all an inspiration to me. And an education.

I find out when Asparagus is on sale, what market has the best sales, who is running for local government, what is making our country great and who not to vote for. I also find out an amazing amount of local gossip.

I have been in this building for four years and barely know my neighbors. This quiet little group tell me every time there has been a plumbing problem, exactly how a robbery took place, who is getting married, who is getting unmarried, well everything imaginable.

They also give me advice. I’m a kid to them. And I lap it up. They have raised families, fought in wars, immigrated, and survived cancer, death of loved ones and aging.

They are truly inspiring and it is an honor to be welcomed into their group.

Their knowledge is a little spooky though. They never ask me personal questions and I never say much but I just have this feeling they know everything.

Judith at growingyoungereachday.wordpress.com did a nice piece on
Chronology vs Biology. She is fairly new having just started her blog in March. If you get a chance please stop by and welcome her!
